Just saw this on the AECB site:

Quote:
DAVID BELLAMY ASKED TO STAND DOWN AS PATRON
Statement from Paul Allen, CAT Development Director:
"Over the past three decades, the Centre for Alternative Technology
(CAT) has consistently worked to educate the public, on the need for
urgent action to combat the consequences of human activity upon our
planet. One of the most serious of these effects is climate change.
Informed scientific opinion is now firmly of the view that climate
change presents a real and serious problem. Some of Prof Bellamy's
recent published statements seem to be flying in the face of the
considered opinion of the majority of the scientific community. Such
statements are clearly inconsistent with the standpoint of CAT.
Whilst the Centre is most appreciative of Bellamy's support for CAT's
work, in view of his current position and recent public statements on
climate change, we now have no option but to remove his name from our
list of patrons as we no longer feel able for Bellamy's name to be
associated with the work of the Centre for Alternative Technology."

I'm certainly one who thinks we could all use far less resources etc but there doesn't seem to be any accepted view and new theories seem to crop up every day. Has Prof B said we don't need to care or that some of the theories are not correct?

Something along the lines of 'Global warning isn't happening and oil companies are OK really'. I paraphrase to be concise. Monbiot did a review of some articles recently which I think cabposted a link to.

But has there been a decent report based on hard data over a good number of years? A while back we were told we would have global cooling, people keep saying we have gone through hotter spells in the last few hundred years etc, etc. Now I'm very much someone who would rather use less and look after the oil reserves etc but with some many reports coming out saying a mixed bag of ideas it's easy to see why people are not bothered.

There are a number of "interested parties" who wish to promote the idea that global warming isn't happening, or not much, or its all natural...
Such ideas bear the same relation to scientific orthodoxy as does the idea that smoking isn't really harmful...

And, sadly, Bellamy seems to have become what Marx(?) called a "useful fool"...

There are indeed new theories about all the intricate details of all aspects of climate - but the big picture is unquestionably that it IS happening.

I think there is a lot of grey scientific areas with the environment, though there probably would be less if oil companies and others were not determined to muddy the waters

But Bellemy got caught out spouting blatant crap.

I'm just hoping the oil will get too expensive (and "run out") before it's too late...

I don't. From a selfish point of view my husband would be out of a job, we are in the middle of a £100,000 house renorvation / restoration project so we would not be able to pay the mortgage could not sell as the house needs alot of work so would have to give keys back to bank, with cc outstanding we would be made homeless and bankrupt straight away.

What I would rather see is sensible use by all.

Oil won't "run out", however, it's very likely that it will get more expensive (as it has been doing this summer). Basically, demand will outstrip supply, and not just current practical supply, but possible supply. Once that happens (allowing for a few ups and downs), we are in a whole new ball game, and I don't think that it will be interesting,

Peter.

i hope we can afford to put oil in the tank this year

800 litres that we bought at the end of dec just about to finish......

the price is much higher this year

we are as frugal as we can be, using the fire place and not having the thermostat over 15 degrees at all last winter but it ran out in the end..................

when i asked our supplier about purchasing some he suggested that we hang on for as long as we can................

One dangerous possibility is that oil supply will run out in the high demand countries (US / europe) leaving available supplies in those areas which are popularly and euphamistically called 'unstable' (middle east, etc.) At which point things get 'interesting' if viable alternatives are not available.
