Fresh from our first attempt at sea fishing I have a few questions that I can't seem to find an answer to and would greatly appreciate some pointers.

Firstly when casting out small lures or spinners they didn't go that far on their own so I added some decent sized lead shot about 12 inches above the lure. This helped greatly but I can't seem to find out much about using weights with lures other than using a heavy lure. So, what's the best way to increase the casting distance of a light lure/spinner?

Secondly the books suggest washing any tackle used in fresh water to stop it going rusty. So I've washed my tackle and dried it, now should I lightly oil it with something like veg oil to stop further rust or would this put future fish off? I'm mainly thinking about hooks, lures and spinners that have rustable parts.

Longer distance casting. Are you using a fixed spool reel? If so, then consider using a lighter weight line as it should drop off the reel easier so your lure will go faster. Also make sure your rod is nice and whippy.
I'd have thought washing off your tackle (ahem) with fresh water alone would be OK. I'd be wary of oiling your tackle afterwards as I wonder if the smell would put fish off? Not sure about that though.

If your lure is too light for your rod or if you havent got enough line on your reel, then you wont be able to cast very far, no matter what you do.

Yep, fixed spool reel. Ideally I should use a lighter line and wait for a fine day. However, as we can't just nip down to the sea and have to plan well in advance we have to put up with the weather. When we went it was quite windy and the size of the rod and lightness of the line didn't have much effect. I understand what you're saying and I'll remember it when we have more opportunities.

Plenty of line on the reel and adding weights certainly did vastly improve casting length, I'm just a little surprised that this doesn't seem to be mentioned when people discuss spinning and would like to know if anyone does do it and how add them correctly.

You can cast these light spinners a fair distance if your rods action is designed to cast such weights.

What pound line have you got on your reel ?

One rod had about 7kg line and the other much heavier, the rods are certainly not the most expensive ones! I know better rods and line will help but for now a cheap solution would be great. Some more googling has suggested a method of adding a 1 or 2ozs lead weight just in front of the lure so I'll try that next time.

15lb line seems a little excessive for spinning, and Bodger's advice to have your spool completely full of line is a good one.

I know but the cost of a proper spinning set-up would be what, at least £100? Adding a lead weight 10p? There's plenty of line on the reels.

Get onto E Bay TC, a light spinning set up comes at a far more reasonable price

After a bit more googling I've found this page. If you look for "Spinning Rigs" it shows two rigs and the bottom one is roughly what I'd come up with although I used 3 1.5g shot rather than the bullet/barrel lead, so I'm not mad after all. I found the 4.5g of shot doubled the cast distance and didn't seem to cause the spinner to sink when reeling in so a very small bullet/barrel lead would seem ideal or I'll just stick to the shot.

wd40 attracts most fish ,ace on tackle and line (aids casting as well)
when adding larger wieghts (i use 40 to 100g but i have beasty beachcasting tackle) a sliding float , with a rubber band on the line to limit the sink depth , allows long casts and vertical as well as horizontal movement of the lure

fish (the other one)

Thanks for the pic fish, that's what I'll use next time provided I can track down some small bullet leads.
