I've always made soap using essential oils rather than fragrance oils. But I've seen some rather yummy sounding fragrance oils recently (cosmetic grade) and thought about buying some to use in my soaps. Are there any advantages/disadvantages of using one over the other? (apart from the obvious aromatherapy benefits).

The biggest advantage is the range of smells- its perfectly true that you have a much wider range, plus the cost, FOs are typically a lot cheaper than EOs. However, a lot of FOs make soap 'seize'- literally set like a brick whilst you stir it, so you do have to be really careful to check if teh FO you want to use is proven ok in the type of soap you make (specify which type, a lot more will work in melt and pour than work on cold process for example). There are allergen listings for FOs just as there are for EOs, so even if making just for your own use its good practice to always ask for the allergen declaration sheet so you know what you are using and whether you might be overdoing it.
Otherwise have fun

Thanks Sally, I hadn't thought about the allergen issues for FO so will make sure I buy in smaller sizes first to test.

The soap kitchen has a range of fragrance oils made for soap, it doesn't contain alcohol so it doesn't make the soap sieze.

The postage costs are low too.

Soap kitchen are a good source, I use a few of their oils and I buy my lye from them. Very good about setting out info on safety, legalities etc too
