I love a bit of cockling and clamming, but have never quite managed to get the hang of removing all the sand.

Everything I have read says "2hours in salt water with some cornmeal" (or other random edible bitty thing), but it doesn't seem to work for me - anyone got any other tips?

W e often collect cockles out on the Stiffkey marshes and we find that 24 hours in a buckett of salty water makes them a lot less sandy. I'm not sure that adding anything makes any difference.

I agree with MSASTLES - leave them in a bucket of seawater overnight.

Thanks for the replies

Do you folks refrigerate them, or leave at room temp?

Also do you actually use seawater or just salted tapwater?

I leave them outside, in seawater. Make sure you are far away from sewers etc when you collect the water.
