I was speaking to an Essex grower yesterday, said he's unable to sell to his raspberries to one of his supermarket customer as they're buying airfreighted imports from the US for cheaper.

Said he's very happy that the bulk of his stuff goes to Sainsburys and Waitrose, he says they do have a commitment to British producers.

Possibly due to cheaper labour costs in the US. Dare I say it might be another effect of the minimum wage here?

Last week I bought "local" tomatoes at my nearest greengrocer's shop for 79p/lb. Dutch tomatoes were 49p/lb. Batty .
