Reports I've heard (from Bagpuss) suggest that the going rate for S. Georges mushrooms in one local shop is £25 per kilo.

Which means that on a nice evening cycle ride yeaterday I picked 50 quids worth, plus some more for the fairy ring mushrooms.

Like I always say, NEVER think about how much your mushrooms are worth. It'll make you gibber. Sometimes I wonder whether my dried mushrooms should be insured!

Two mids that think as one... I feel as if I'd just made and eaten a quiche of £50 notes! Bit tastier, though. I don't sell fungi that I find, but do use wild fruits in jams, jellies etc. that I sell, so I'm getting a bit back.

Actually, I think the enjoyment we get from the activity of foraging and the satisfaction of finding wild edibles is worth more than you could earn in cash terms from the project. And it does give a certain social cachet around here!

I've sometimes considered selling fungi, but at the end of the day it's so much more satisfying to give them to people; gifts of dried mushrooms at Christmas must save us a fortune.

There's a branch of House of Fraser about 10 minutes from where I work...£25ish a kilo is about the cheapest wild mushrooms they sell, and £40ish is pretty regular too. Some of them look pretty sorry for themselves, too (then again so would I after a week or two in a department store).

It is an interesting point although one not to dwell on too much! Of course, it's not just foraging - we've probably had £10 or £20 worth of "organic baby leaf freshly harvested with a herb dressing" salads in the last month

Not frequenting the trendier shops, I've no idea how much you'd pay for sorrel. How much does that cost to buy?

Well darlings, when one has an image to maintain, it's all right for you eternal student types in your university towns but down here you know, when you have the bridge club to dinner and the Rotary wives for coffee..

Erm, I have no idea. I like looking around the food department though so I'll have a look next time I'm in. I guess it comes in mixed salads...watercress is a good £1.50 at least, for a portion that wouldn't fill two tummies.
