Notable that the top 2 articles are getting 300 views a piece in the last week. Which roughly means day or night every 40 minutes someone is reading one of them. Many other articles are easily getting more than 100 views a week.
I don't think anyone can wonder of indeed they ever did about how worthwhile it is to write for the site
It is also notable that some of the adverts that have fallen off the front page, are still seeing 20 views a week.

Are most of the visits to the top two articles due to search engine hits?

Chicken keeping I would say for certain most are.

First steps is harder to tell, as the search terms could be quite a few things.

I'm startled that Wild food in Feb. has picked up so many hits. I wasn't entirely sure that it was worth going monthly with those, but it looks like it is.

Clearly it is woth doing, getting about 20 reads a day at the moment Which as we tail off toward March is pretty good going.

But these types of monthly articles are timeless. Assuming we are still going in 10 years time. We would still be prominantly showing off that article in February.

When consider any type of monthly thing like this, we have to think long term
