I am getting fed up of winter root vegetable soups. I like them as they're quick, cheap, healthy and convinient to take to work in frozen blocks. But I don't much fancy them.

What can I add to make them more interesting? Not fond of curry spices (except in curry!)

Carrot soup with orange works well, although it may sound a strange combination- just chicken stock, salt and pepper, and the juice of one or two oranges. Top it with snipped chives. I add dried lima beans and moroccan spice mix to winter vegetable soups- always popular with the hungry hordes.
Tomato soup with orange is another, although not really root vegetable.

Dried tomatoes?, basil?

Most of my tomato crop goes to make dried tomatoes or soup bases for the winter - root veg for the body and tomato and basil as a reminder of summer - oh and finished off with cheese, parmesan for preference but cheddar will do.

parsnip and chilli goes very well, An excellent soup in it's own right.

Adding white beans to any soup turns it from a snack to a meal, and brings in new textures and flavours.

Try ground cumin. It won't taste like "curry" if you know what I mean. The cumin compliments the root veg well. A dash of lemon juice will pull it all together
