I've had an interesting 'chat' with the tax office today. Because I'd not worked for a while before starting another job, they insisted I filled out yet another form other than a P46. When I asked why they said they didn't have all my details. I pointed out they did have all my details as I'd filled out the correct forms in each job.

It basically turns out they don't believe I took some time off without cliaming benefits etc... I wish they would actually chase the obvious people who don't pay their full tax.

A lot of isues here, but a few pointers.....
My hubby has been in business for 10 years, Engineering (Precision)
this is what I have learnt

VAT.........dont go there unless you have to! If you do, be honest. loads of people put everything vat wise through the books,,,,,,,,,,hoover, shopping (dog food............guard dog) forget it...they will get suspicios & do surprise inspection.want to see big invoice - in or case works Pick up and small invoice-could be anything, but they will want to see it - so any hoover at home not at workplace will cause suspicion and then they will dig further!

ACCOUNTANTS ....... should charge what they can claw back

CUSTOMERS ........ come first

PRICE.... if it's good what you do, & they question the price.they deserve someone cheaper!!! But they'll come back to you to put it right!!!

I have just come back from the accountants now. Just the final figures to get done and we are done. Thank goodness for that.!!

hmmm interesting. I am certified, and I have been signing them for years....never any comeback.

Phew! Just finished our tax returns. The bloomin I.R. web site has been playing up all weekend, it's taken ages to get the returns accepted with the online service. All done for another year. We can get on with catching up with all the things we've put to one side now.

Did ours last week, and for the first time ever gave thanks for slf-assessment, even though we earn peanuts these days. Fingers crossed, but I've clawed back over a grand for t'other half, and wiped out my arrears completely. Shame the interest only works in one direction, though

Self Assessment- Tax doesn't have to be taxing When tax is causing you problems, you know you're earning too much

Not quite, if you work for only a few months out of a year you end up paying too much tax. I filed my return last July I think, amazing how quick you can get it in when you are owed money.

Agree Gervase, if only the IR paid interest.

I managed to get 6pence interest from them for the 2002/03 year.

Still not sure what I should spend it on..

Was it taxable.
