Has anybody ever come across/used a recipe for making something that could function as an icecream cone?

I suppose a brandy snap mix might be worth a try.

I like the "biscuit" cones and not the ones that taste like Communion wafer, but everything in the shops contains weirdness and wonderfulness that seems to defeat the object of making your own ice cream.

I've seen one recipe in an icecream recipe book but that required Moroccan brick pastry, or something equally unheard of to me. Anyone know what it is?

I have a vague memory of brik being a sort of layered pie. If I remember rightly it uses filo pastry or something like it.

Edited to say that my vague memories are not as reliable as they used to be!!!

Thanks Judith - the spelling looks right too.

Note to all members, next time I ask a question can you please say to me "have you looked in your books"?

Yesterday I picked up a book from the station book shop called "Ice Cream".

What do we have on pg 150 of "Ice Cream"???

"Ice Cream Cones"

It doesn't appear to be available any more so here is the recipe:

2 egg whites
4 ounces caster sugar
2 ounces plain flour sifted
3 tablespoons of melted unsalted butter

Line baking sheets with silicone paper or foil. Whisk whites til stiff, fold in half sugar and whisk again, fold in remaining sugar, then flour and butter.

Drop spoonfuls on to the baking sheets and bake 200c gas 6 400f for 2-4 mins until a light brown round the edges, remove with a palette knife or fish slice an mould around greased cream horn tins. Slip off when cool. Makes about 14 no advice on storage.

Hmmm.

Oooh thanks Jo - should have been more patient and saved myself some typing. I've seen Joy of Baking before, never thought to look, it's a good site, isn't it?

Of course for purposes of quality control I will probably have to try both recipes

We don't have any cream horn tins. We could borrow a sheep.

Ahh. You mean books? The one I showed you last night I bought last week. This one I only got yesterday and it was too big to bring back with my library books.

Think of it as a charity donation

That's one thing I probably won't buy. I thought I might be able to improvise with some silicon paper and a butchered mineral water bottle....

Not sure, being a veggie, but I expect they're served up in fast food outlets across the country
