We're thinking of keeping some bees. We've done a lot of 'thinking about' ... over ten years I'd say. Friends have advised us to connect with a local bee keeping group/assocation for support and advice.

We are based near Aberdare. Reading the Welsh Beekeepers website, they list lost of local groups eg. in Swansea, Neath, etc. but I can't decide what's the best/most active.

Any suggestions from the Downsizer panel ?

Thanks.

We're in Mountain Ash, so very close to you and I need to get our hives sorted out having lost both colonies over the winter. We have extractor and honey tank plus loads of books etc if you need to borrow anything

Gold star to this poster, please.

I've just been talking to the WBKA people and I'm planning the trip now.

I think the one I got from Thornes years ago called 'Guide to bees and honey' was one of the most useful, I think the bee books are over at Gareths mum's, thats where we keep the hives, so I'll dig them out and a huge stack of beekeeping magazines, you are very welcome to borrow them

I've been using this one

Practical Beekeeping by Clive De Bruyn

Edited to say - its a really good upto date book although its missing the latest information on Varroa and Integrated Pest Management but thats the sort of thing you get from your BKA and magazines like BeeCraft

I'm not a beekeeper, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Mastering the Art of Beekeeping" (Vol. 1) by Ormond and Harry Aebi. Extraordinary people who loved their bees. Must get around to buying volume 2 one day...

My word, Rhyddid: I was thinking about you the other day and wondering where you'd got to!

How are you?

I'm half way through my beginner's bee keeper's course.
I'll look up the book we were recommended to get when I get home. It's ancient and only available through ABE books - but apparently the best one, if you bear in mind some bits may not be up to date.

The Ted Hooper Guide to bees and honey which is the one I think Sally in Wales mentioned is a good basic book and easily obtainable----have you tried your local library---they usually have some beekeeping books and it's a good way of seeing which one suits you best.

Rhydidd - be warned this is just the start - Getting beekeepers to agree on anything is like trying to push water uphill by hand!!

I wasn't disagreeing about books ---they all have pluses and minuses--which is why I suggested a library sampling to see which suits--I've actually got the Clive de Bruyn one as well---and vol1 and 2 of the one Marigold mentioned

When I went to try our recommended one from the library, I was told there only two copies in the county and they'd both "gone missing".

Oh don't get me wrong - Its all interesting to see the suggestions but we had a discussion about getting people to agree anything at our last BKA meeting and we agreed not to agree !
