It's AUGUST woman, your'e worse than the supermarkets!

Well said. I have a mother in law that as she pushes her dinner plate away murmurs, I wonder what I'll have for tea! Puts me off my food.

I might have agreed that the handgun ban,fox hunting etc etc was reasonable, if they had abolished Christmas at the same time.

I'm in two minds- I agree its far too early for the suoermarket displays, but hand made goodies take time, and its good to plan ahead. Its like that classic dessert of elderberry icecream served with elderflower sorbet. Impossible without forward planning but sooooo yummy. So preparing for midwinter in the summer is sort of slightly necessary.

To all the people who are complaining about the mention of christmas:

a) Do you give home made gifts or do you buy them?

b) If it bothers you that much why open the thread?

You do have a habit of speaking your mind but why not, it's an interesting mind and I agree with you...if I was talking about stocking up on Cadbury selection packs on 3-for-2 (which I have no doubt you can do!) and just how soon you could get the illuminations out then Jema and Footprints would have a good point, but really, every season requires preparation; don't think anyone will object to the fact that one of my favourite Christmas holiday occupations is making seed lists, and isn't collecting summer fruits for wine making just the same aim but without the sparkly holly-decorated label?

Seriously, I hate people going on about Christmas in autumn and summer in spring, but a lot of this site's aims involve thinking before you act and thinking in to the future to avoid waste - which is just what we're doing here!

So in conclusion, I would like to say:

na na na na na.

Good to know we're still a home for serious debate

Now, back to the topic at hand...

Having gone through the seasonal debacle in Sainsbury's for 19 years where the population spend triple their usual budget on food when the supermarkets only close for 48 hours I cringe at the sight of christmas lines being put on in September. This September window is the real "back to school" time which actually started in supermarkets and the like before the kids broke up for summer. The ritual starts with cards and wrap in the first week back in September and goes on each week with more added through til Xmas week itself. On Xmas eve locking up I have accepted a delivery of creme eggs on occasion . Now it tends to be a month od "diet and healthy living" before the Easter nonsense starts.

To get back on track, this has made me realise I have no idea yet what I will be making as midwinter gifts, so its been very handy to have an opportunity to at least consider that there are only so many crafting days left available to me.

Why not get yourself some of those glass preserve jars and make up some christmas chutney. They can open it up on xmas day and have a dollop of it with there cold turkey thats going to last them for the week after christmas.

Good plan. Course, if the bees do well this year everyone can have honey, but I've done that before, so I ought to be more inventive

So far I've made:
3 rag rugs (colours to match recipients decor)
dozens of folded star patchwork blocks that will be made up into cushions, purses, needle cases etc.
Jams & chutneys (bit boring but a useful last minute gift standby)
I have a press full of flowers and several (30 ish) sheets of home made paper to make pressed flower pictures with. Just need to buy clip frames.
A couple of ribbon weaving blocks for an evening bag.
On the still to do list is:
fairies made with some of my raw ryeland wool.
damson port (always a fav)
Hyacinth bulbs in hand painted terracota pots.

I make throughout the year, I have to, I simply refuse to 'buy' presents. Being Pagan myself, giving something that I've made involves thinking of the person that I'm making it for and stitching/weaving/cooking etc loving energy into the making process.

Oops got a bit spiritual there, sorry!
