I have made a press using a bottle jack and its ok but I can see it would be able to get much more juice out if the apples were mushy first.

Partners friend says that if you freeze apples and then defrost them its saves having to mash them up prior to pressing 'juice comes out straight away'.

Anyone else heard of or tried this?

yes it makes a huge difference.

freeze them - be aware it can take a while for a mass of apples to freeze, then thaw them in food safe plastic boxes/buckets etc (as some of the juice will wander out without pressing).

Once thawed you can squeeze the juice out with your hands, so your bottle jack press should be fine. our first press was a homemade bottle jack affair and it worked out fine

How long - overnight?

Do you prepare the apples in any way?

At the garden where I work, they leave the apples out on the patio tables and the sugars really develop with the chilly nights we've had, as well as being easier to juice.

I put my apples in the freezer Friday and took them out the sunday morning. They took another 24 hours to defrost.
Pressed them this morning and got loads of juice out. Its much clearer than before when I was just bashing the apples prior to pressing.

Here's the press with the juice in the pan in the foreground:

I'm going to freeze the juice as I haven't a pasteuriser.

Looks good. If you haven't got a pasteuriser and you don't want any oxidation over time, then it's often best to add a little ascorbic acid (vitamin C) before freezing.......
