I found the Black Cherry very lacking in flavour and only grew it once. Nice colour though

I find orange skinned tomatoes have the best flavour.

But I guess that like apples it depends on what aspect of flavour you go for.

I like tartness but I also want something supersweet.

I have bought Galina Cherry again
Shirley
Tigerella

Just waiting for them to be delivered but I was thinking if anyone has any seeds of varieties they think have good flavour, we could do some swapsies.

Shan..if its supersweet you are after..I've got some spare Sun Belle seed. They are yellow cherry toms..plum shape with quite meaty flesh.
I like them when they still have hint of green on 'bottie', when fully ripe they are almost sickly sweet.
Other one that I have spare some spare of is sugar lump. Some sites say its same as gardeners delight..but I have grown both side by side and there is difference..GD has slightly more tartness to it and SL more sugary.
So If you are interested send me PM..

Is there a specific date when people plant their tomato seeds indoors? I have never grown them from seed before, but want to give it a go this year.

About now.
I put mine in the propagator a couple of weeks ago & they are now happily sitting on a windowsill.

Here in N.Ireland I have found starting in Jan is too early. I usually leave until late Feb or early March....

Don't plant too many seeds!

I don't plant mine till early March but usually find that every one comes up. So I just put five seeds of any variety in a pot ( I tend to try about 10 kinds) and still end up trying to get rehome loads of them in May.

Since you're in Aberdeenshire Celestialspore I would definitely hang on a month or two longer still; any of our Scottish chums around to provide reassurance?

Shan - a lot of people really like Sungold, and T&M are offering it for 20p, with postage free over £10, in case there's anything else you want from them. Neither are especially my cup of tea but they do suit some people so could be worth a look in your Great Tomato Hunt!

I think a lot of it is down to circumstances and your own personal taste; really the best bet is to try them all

Ahh..to cut that bill down..how about saving your own seeds?
Not that it has cut my bills down that much.. ..I just want to try more different varieties and save..buy, try and save..buy, try and save..etc.
With the effect that each year I have to invest to new seed box..and bigger too..
Ps Shan..don't go and buy anymore tomato seeds until postie has done his delivery..
