I'm used to gardening on slightly acidic soil in Manchester and just wondering if anyone knows about soil in fens, where we are now? We're on the edge of the fens in Heckington. People at the village allotments say soil is quite clayey - but doesn't seem that way in the garden - seems a very nice texture.

I lived in Bourne, and they thought their soil wasn't very good either! Believe me, after struggling with clay soil in Northamptonshire, I was in garden heaven. You should be able to grow anything in the soil up there. Fen soil is generally on the alkaline side, but the only way you can really tell is to do a PH test, or even quicker, look at the plants that are thriving in the garden already and check their needs.

the fens have a varied mix of soils. we can grow pretty much anything here but best doing a soil test.

Those soil pH testing kits from Homebase etc give an accurate enough result if you are not growing commercially, and you do not have a large amount of land that has very obviously different areas. They come in 3-packs, so you can sample from more than one area of your ground.
