as he offered to pay and then bounced the payment i recon the legal route is a smart stratagem

you may be down the line from banks, mortgages etc but distress cases with merit can be effective(and sometimes done by the distressed, sometimes as a no win no fee or even a monkey for good advice and a diy case)

social pressure(a very broad term)needs careful choice

"this chap is a rogue" is one way, it can have assorted outcomes, done well it can be effective

RPG through the wall makes a point but is "noisy"

choose your routes wisely.

I wondered why you were digging a deep gate post hole by hand when you said you had a 550.

Well after all the who-ha regarding the non-payment of my dues the chap has got his act together and paid this money through I don't know who, where or how, but £8k got into my bank account. Next thing to do is to change the account as I don't want him getting access via some nasty route as he is a wiz kid with the computer. Next thing I will be writing to him to find my digger and get it back to me from wherever he deposited it after his father gave up his farm. The digger was cheap, but I still want it, even if it does need work! I think of all the things I could have done with it over the years-at least 10. This all came about because I trusted someone, who, I discovered, once I got to work, that his lying is innate. Too late then. You are right about the digger and digging holes. I wish I had one of those things they call a child, who as a young man than me, would come and watch me till he could no longer watch, but needed to get involved! I only have about a foot to go and am relying on the water to soften the hole at the bottom, and allow me to get the rest out with the 2 handled shovel with relative ease.

I have done nothing to the agricultural side of my place for a week as the firewood is flying off the shelf so the large shed project has been shelved for a while to make sure I have sufficient kindling in stock. Today is the first day I have not needed to top the shop's stock for several weeks. They must have all switched on the heating and I can get back to putting kindling into stock. By doing this by hand I chop regularly through the summer and always think I have enough by December-ha ha.

I guess I will see you all next Tuesday, as the library has decided only to open on Tuesday and Thursday which is a pain. They don't reduce my rates when they cut services, and normally increase the price of the rates to pay their over worked personnel and the chief executive of the county council. But someone has to do the work. I wonder if the old saying that "If each before his own door swept the village would be clean" should be applied, and we could save a man and a lorry, for 5 minutes a day each? I already sweep my piece of roadside a few times a year otherwise it is a mess.

Very glad you have got the money without any further trouble. As you say, now to find the digger, so hope that is as successful.

We are very busy with firewood, although things have calmed down a bit from a month or two ago when everyone was stocking up. Besoms seem to be the flavour of the month, as son put them back as available on the web site, so I am making them like nobody's business. The time might come when I run out of birch, then they will be out of stock until the new batch is ready. Cutting will start next month and hopefully will get plenty in for the new season. We also have an order for charcoal, and we think if that went back in stock on the website that would sell too. Trouble is, charcoal burning in the dark is an overrated passtime.

More progress, Wales is, no longer under lock down, it is just that the border to England is not far away and they still keep coming in-to the "cottage" for the weekend. I must not knock it as they buy my firewood to dry their cottages out!
I am still selling kindling like it is the latest "must have thing" to have at home on show. Not much to report except that I am on with logs and kindling and getting them up to speed ready for the Christmas rush.
On another note I am probably staying at home for the holidays. I don't think it is a good idea to go where there are 3 young children, and two sets of parents and 1 set of grandparents of the same clan, but not my clan. I would normally go to the grand parents and their offspring come to them, but I had a long conversation with the daughter and said the wise man will stay at home, she has said she will check it out, but I think I am being sensibly cautious.

that seems wise.

a few phone calls or whatever is a good plan this year rather than all round to your f and f's place for a visit

re covid 19 stuff i am back on the ppe 3 dual filter just for fun for shopping etc, it is comfy and it works(even for traffic fumes, grrrr)

i am pretty sure i was an early adopter of the virus so i may be"safe" and probably i am "harmless" as time has passed but others won't lose by that choice unless it makes em worry they need a respirator not a flap:twisted:

ps
a family size crate of good P5 respirators and filters was/is a thought, if i did i would get the fashion accessories as well as consumables like fullers earth and a few choice injectables in the package

i know some odd shops £80 for mask +converter ring* for 40 or 60 mm filters+ 2 filters.
filters about a tenner(24hr in nbc conditions so far longer with domestic use, or even spraying dry rot old style with horrible stuff from personal experience
*converter ring = nato or russian style filters will work

I think you are very wise to stay at home Gregotyn. I also didn't think people were supposed to go to their weekend cottages from or in England at the moment as I know some people with woods have said they can't go there. Make sure you keep away from any 'weekenders' Gregotyn, and wear a mask when delivering or being payed. We do when making firewood deliveries, although I do sometimes ring the door bell and stay well back when they answer as they may not like a masked stranger ringing the bell.

We actually managed to get some new filters for our dust masks we use for charcoal processing during the summer, but they were rationed to 2 pairs per order, so luckily we now all have clean filters and I think 1 spare pair. It makes a lot of difference. I can see why you want to wear a respirator in and around town at the moment Dpack. We are able to keep out of town pretty well, so ordinary masks are fairly well all right here.

We haven't resorted to online shopping, but I use two farm shops, both of which are fairly quiet and well regulated, our local Co-op and one supermarket, which isn't too bad when I go there. Most people round here are quite good about wearing masks, and I am mainly able to keep away from them. Our only problem is the chemists which is in a supermarket which is not ideal, but again, able to avoid people as far as possible.

online and local is possible for lots of stuff

online and mom and pop business is possible

folk say waitrose is posh, i say it is a branch of a collective enterprise working the mid quality market and using a fairly ethical trading model

some things i need are a bit niche, the corner shop does not stock borax flux cones, rolling mills or a pan on a slow train from china at 35% of the cost of the local identical one/s, that is an average saving for in country to a mile away examples
if you like decent catering quality pans or "speciality tea bag sample" "no value"(plant hormone but it was a moody looking crystalline chemical in a plastic bag with a few letters and numbers to id it and very unusual documentation) slow train is a very good option
if you are not in a hurry it but want good value direct and wait seems to work well for my weird stuff

a while back i could have spent a grand on a microscope but i spent £110 on the same model minus the "name badge" of a well known firm posted from the folk who make them in india
i think they are being ripped off if that reflects even half of the mark up of what they sell to the orderer from the cost price of the production over runs

So far I have managed to get the things I want using shops, although curtailed somewhat at the moment of course. Husband and son do use internet shopping as increasingly the specialist things we need are not available in shops locally. Quite a lot do come from British sources though. We also sell some of our products on line.

I have another whole half hour!

I am working on logs for sale and kindling; the kindling is the priority. Stock goes slowly and then "bang" off we go! Now that I am retired from the tractor depot I have much more time to "do", so the wood cutting should never be a problem, only my fitness and ability to find pallets will govern my "I'm just an 'umble wood cutter Sir"-to quote Benny Hill. I must admit chopping wood is not a mind taxing occupation, but does need concentration! And of course you get time to plan other projects as you chop wood, seeing the short first finger left hand!

I am shovelling the base of the new shed to some degree of level with the aim of getting down some hard core so that I can get the tractor onto this surface without getting stuck and get it rolled. It is very wet and however much I want to get on it is slow progress with the wet ground. I sort of wondered if it may be an idea to buy some cement and see if that will stiffen the base of the floor to be which will be about 6 inches above ground level on completion. I should have said it will be a level floor about 6" above ground level at the high side and a foot higher on the bottom side, to give a level floor in a 2 vehicle side by side garage and 2 vehicle long. Anyway it is wet so progress is slow!
Times up now got to go. I hope you are all well.
