I am no gardener. But my Lilac appears to have died over the winter. Not that bothered over the looks, but it came as a spur from a tree in the garden of a now dead friend after she died before the land was sold. So I'm rather upset. But no growth, nothing. Worth cutting back? To ground level? First branch level? If I can't save it I can't but I'd like to try.

If it is dead, then you can't make it worse. Else you'll notice it isn't dead when you cut into healthy cambium under the bark...

Wow. A dead lilac? I thought it was indestructible! My Mum's been trying to get rid of hers for 30 years - it keeps sending bits up under her lawn! I'd cut off the really ugly bits & then ignore it for a year! Fingers crossed
