Re the runners. We are thinking of puting Heras panel over the side of the gate so it is more difficult to climb. Sadly there was not a 'quick' route, but we will speak to the manager of the wood where they probably got out to deal with the fence there, which is currently flat. No, you didn't go to a strange school. I learnt stalking in Guides, and can get in front of people in our woods, or stand still and watch them, and they are completely unaware of my presence. My best ever was when taking part in a Scout wide game when I was wearing a white jacket in a wood at night. By standing still, the lads thought I was just a tree of something. Not the best camouflage, but I didn't have another jacket, and it was rather chilly.

I went up to the woods on Thursday to meet husband and son who had been out on a delivery and a hare was wandering around the 'yard' quite happily. I was sat in the van, and it didn't seem to notice me. A jay also flew down into a tree in front of me, so two nice bits of wildlife in one sitting.

the history and "wildlife study" of cammo is interesting

bold can be invisible to the observer

my best hide was not me, a 6 foot crowbar in full sight standing proud in the ground , invisible from a few feet away due to one and a half turns of bramble
getting wookie to play hunt the crowbar was very funny

a military chum taught me the lie down, throw frass up, stay quiet, do it fast and it is surprisingly effective
that survived an unplanned 20 person hide and seek game at 5 yards on open moorland, a few of them were quite good but......
somewhere i have one of his magnum photos, tis a pile of seaweed, find the one eye is difficult.
he set the self timer on the camera and went for it, well under ten seconds is adequate

Willife of late was a hare and jay in the woods while I was sitting in the van waiting for husband and son, and a fox as bold as brass walking along the pavement towards me along a moderately busy road. Someone was coming the other way, so when foxy saw as coming from opposite directions it shot down a driveway. Looked nice and healthy anyway.

Hearing thrushes in the woods, and a couple of robins declaring their territories.

there are some invertebrates out, the wall nettle has not been checked for them yet, the bramble shoots are doing an inch a day so will soon be food for a succession of wee critters(and birds) and refuge from hunters like grin

a slight aside, i topped up the bramble bed and added the "weeds" from several fish boxes as well
out of 15 or so a dozen are medicinal or tasty some are both, bees like the other three

thinking of grin , a few days back i saw mr and mrs grin doing air patrol, i am not sure if they were having a romantic experience on a hunt or doubling their chances of success to take lunch home for a hatched chick

The buzzards have been courting over the woods lately, so with the peregrine it might be either.

Had the dormouse survey people in yesterday to put up more tubes. Learning from last time, they have decided to put them on the field side of the hedge as last year it get rather 'interesting' when the leaves were on the bushes and trees. We went to ask their advice about the gap in the hedge the power people had bulldozed through and also to ask them not to work in one bit as the ash trees need to come down and are a bit iffy. We found a small common lizard, which is the first we have seen in our wood, and some early violets in flower, so rather nice. After that we tackled the charcoal and got a delicate shade of black.

tis a bit hard to tell from the snap but your little friend looks a bit house rather than "wild"

it might be back, or its chums will be looking for it

You can see it better on the full size image. It is hard to see on this picture.

It came up through a hole in the floorboards where I'm going to drop some cables through, so I've blocked it for now. I will be keeping a close eye on things. Cute but unwanted in the house.

Pale tummy, that I could see.

Both about the same, tail maybe a little shorter.

It was like a brown colour.
