Somebody, somewhere mentioned that velcro round pots stop slugs.

Whoever you are (I can't find it!) does it really work, and which bit of the velcro do you use (I presume the rougher one) as I reckon it'l be cheaper that copper tape.

I'm going to grow my salads in boxes and want to keep the little so and sos out!

'Twas me !!! It has worked so far on smaller pots (the rough stuff, of course), am about to do it on a much grander scale this year, round my half oak barrels. Wish me luck!!!!

Oh and PS I grew all my salad in boxes last year, and left them in the greenhouse. Had a few aphids but on the whole it was very successful, almost more than i could eat. Cut and come again Salad Bowl worked best, as did rocket. Good luck!

Thanks nettie, I'm going to start some of the early ones in my little plastic greenhouse, but after that they'll have to fend for themselves on the patio, cos I'm going to put some early carrots and them some aubergines and a loofah in it (Slugs keep getting that, too. Grrrr) I've got loads of fleece though, so they'll get some of that.

What did you do about the aphids. They always get my honeysuckle and basil. Is there anything I can sacrifice plant for them (Apart from honeysuckle and basil, which I'm fond of as they are!)

Don't forget you can buy a reel of copper tape to put on flower pots etc. It's quite cheap and slugs don't like copper. We tried it last year on a hosta pot (slug nivana) and it did very well until the leaves touched other, non-protected, pots. We'll use it again this year on a few more pots.

I've seen it in gardening catologues, but it seemed quite expensive. Can you get it from DIY shops or anything - what's it really meant for (they always ask, and I never know when I want something for some improvised purpose!)

Bugs, are you there? Where did the copper tape come from? Was it for decoration?

I'm sure you can buy it for slug control as you often read slugs don't like crossing copper.

Use the copper strip to prevent worms escaping (I farm them for fishing), but would like to find a cheap source.

That would also work for a worm bin then, as people often have problems with worms escaping from garden wormaries. We might get someone to try that and post back.

I bought mine from a craft shop a few years ago as I noticed it was significantly cheaper. It's also quite fine (5mm I think) which doesn't seem to make it any less effective and means it's either less obtrusive or you can do it two or thre times to make it pretty (this is after all thread with a lot of girls on it! ).

www.hobbicraft.co.uk in Leeds, I don't think they're related to the annoying adverts, they were there first as far as I know. It doesn't say here how long their rolls are but I think it's 10 metres or so - we still have loads left.

ooohhh - have ordered a catalogue (nice bathtime reading!) It doesn't say how long the tape was but it's only 3.95, and in Harrod horticultural it was 10 quid for 4m - if bugs had loads left, it must be better value.

By the way Bugs, if I spend hundreds of pounds in there IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT!

(My Baldwins order came today - but that was Fluffykitten's fault! )

Sorry but I think the Hobbiecraft in leeds is related to the annoying ad. If I remember right they are part of a nationwide group of craft superstores, and yes you probably will spend a fortune in there.
The copper tape will probably be in the Glass painting dept if you want to nip straight there to avoid temptation.

The hobbicraft that Bugs reccommeded isn't the same as the blue and yellow hobbycraft chain (haven't seen the ads though, so don't know which they're for) As far as I know they don't do web ordering or a catalogue, and are a bit 'kitty'. They do lots of stamping, cardmaking, painting, tapestry and kits, and lots of bits and pieces, but aren't a patch on the little craft places, if you can still find them. Bugs' hobbicraft website loots great - I probably will find lots of lovely things I didn't know I wanted!
