I am beginning to think I should take a more aggressive approach to degassing wine prior to the first racking, as with stuff I bottle quickly I get a bit of pressure when I take the cork out.

You can get stirrers you attach to a drill for this purpose. Do others bother with this sort of step, or am I just impatient as usual?

If it's still gassy after it's clear, and the alcohol content is high enough to tell me it's done, and I've fixed it with sorbate and sulfite, then I might degass. As I make gallon batches, that involves putting a bung in, shaking it, taking the bung out (gingerly to begin with!), and repeating, usually while watching the telly.

This really only happens sometimes with meads and wines made with fruit juices. Otherwise, by the time it's cleared, it's always de-gassed on its own.

Some of your kit wines might be rather gassy when made, I presume?

Yep it is the kits, these are only about 5 weeks from start to bottle.

Well, you can't sit and shake five gallons

You could try one of the variations on a big paddle on a drill; I'm told that's terrible effective, but I've never tried it.

But not a bit of plastic for $25!

I think I can innovate a little more cheaply than that
