My OH does the odd bit of sea fishing (just from the beach) throughout the year. We have just come back from hols where his faithful fishing rod broke. I want to buy him a new one but do not have clue what to buy. What sort of price should I expect to pay, where should I go to get one. I did have a look in a shop whilst away but have no idea what to ask for.

I do hope I don't have to pay a huge amount as I was taken by the bug a bit on hols too and thought I might buy myself one as well

Hi I recently have bought a nice telescopic beachcaster carbon fibre rod on ebay it as brand new and came with a good sized reel with line and it was only £20 and close down to about £ foot when packed away I used it in ireland and caught mackeral and pollack daily hope this helps

For beach fishing you need a beachcaster rod. The length depends on your preference, but if you think of it as a lever that propells the hook out to sea, the longer the lever, the further the cast (in theory).

As Batleygrimmy says, you can pick them up cheaply (new) on eBay. Search for beachcaster and / or beach caster (with a space) and you'll find tons. Just looking quickly myself, there's plenty for around the £20 - £40 mark, some with reels. Watch the postage charges though. If you don't like ebay, search google for the same and see what you find.

Where were you fishing, and what were you catching?

Thanks for the tips - I use ebay alot for buying and selling so will definitely have a look there. They are cheap aren't they, I was expecting to pay alot more than that. We only managed to catch some mackerel, which was lovely cooked about half an hour after catching, but there were alot of fishermen there trying to catch bass - we were fishing on Chesil beach

Nowt wrong with mackerel. Very tasty fish. Were you using feathers or 'proper' bait? Colin

We used bacon as bait to start with and some fish bits from a local fish shop (unidentifiable) - as you say mackerel is indeed a fine fish - the only problem being once you have tasted it fresh nothing you ever buy tastes as good

I saw a man angling off the jetty at the Sandbanks Chain Ferry the other night ... it looked so peaceful. It made me wonder about fishing, which has previoulsy held no allure for me whatsoever.

Thanks Lozzie - good site Be careful you sound like you have been bitten by the bug - I never thought it would hold my interest but it is realy relaxing yet exciting at the same time
