Hi. We are looking for four or so shetland ewes to start a small flock later this summer. Either ewe lambs or older ewes consider, registered or un-registered is fine. We are near Newcastle Emlyn and would prefer to source the sheep as locally as possible. Thanks!

We're in West Cornwall, so our ladies are too far away for you. If you contact the Shetland Sheep Society they will have a list of breeders not just the ones that are advertising stock for sale on their website.

Hello very nice people. I've been lurking in the background, but just couldn't resist helping someone to move into the Shetland fold (or across to the dark-side?).

If you could meet my laid-back flock who are lazing around, fat as butter on the summer grass you wouldn't call them wild - they won't move for anything except the possibility of some nuts. But one of the young ewes did have to be rugby-tackled by my OH so she could be injected. He looked lovely lying in the straw wrapped around a very cross ewe! I love my Shetlands - possibly more than hubby does.

Thanks for your help and comments. Part of our motivation for wantng Shetlands in particular is their high quality coloured fleece. I hope they will not turn out to be too wild as we are planning to rotationaly graze them using temporary fencing for at least part of the year. I know other folk with them who seem happy enough......

we have had shetland sheep for years and think they are excellent in just about all ways. we dont find they are any worse behaved than any other breed. we have: suffolks, texels, lleyns, mules, cheviots, blue faced leicesters and a variety of crosses. in fact the wildest sheep we have are our blue faced leicesters and they are nearly twice the size of the shetties so they can be a real handfull. the best advice i can give is have good fencing and invest in a sheep race (IAE economy races where only £425 + vat last year) both will more than pay for themselves in no time. we find shetland ewes with our texels tups produce good little lambs which we sell to the abatoir at 40kg live weight and they grade quite reasonably. we have had shetland x texel lambs killed for our freezer and everyone that has tried them has said its the best lamb they've ever tasted.
