Have any of you wonderful lot got any helpful tips for competency based interviews?
I'd not heard of them till 2 weeks ago. I've got one on Tuesday so could do with all the help I can get.
Please be gentle as I've not been to an interview in over 10 years and have very little idea of what to expect.
Thanks

This could be useful, I've not had an interview for 19 years! (What is a competency based interview - or what is it a fancy name for?)

Good starting point:

but TBH, they have just wrapped it all up in jargon - know your skills, apply them and take your time to think through any scenarios.

From what I've been looking at it is lots of tell me about a time where you were supportive/destructive/learnt stuff/didn't learn stuff type questions.

use the STAR principles when talking about those times
S - talk about the Situation you were in
T - talk about the Task that was set to you
A - talk about the Actions you took
R - talk about the Result and what you learned, how you could have handled it differently etc

Year's ago at an interview the interviewer tried throwing in a few swerveball questions. One of which was 'What motivates you to get out of bed in the morning'. My answer was 'Usually a full bladder'.
I hasten to say that I didn't get the job. Mind you I wasn't that bothered.
So it looks like honesty is not always the best policy.

For every interview have a throw away answer ready for the question "What could you have done better?"

The answer should be something relatively trivial.

Good luck.
