How much is standing timber worth a tonne ?
I know this is an open ended question like how long is a peice of string, but on one of my shooting permissons the chap wants to sell 20 or so acres of standing timber - it is a mixture of some biggish douglas planted in 1965, larch and nobles. Probably 40% is for planking and poles the rest is pulp and firewood. The access is crap and the timber can only be got away with a JCB Fastrac and 20ft trailer and cleared using a 360 excavator withy a clearing head. The site is steep. The handy thing is that it is only 6 miles from a wood chip factory.
In fairness the woodland owner doesn't have a clue as to what its worth, but the forestry contractor has asked him how much he wants a tonne clear felled to start the negotiations.
What would be good a good starting price without either a. looking stupid or b. totally pricing himself out of the market. The contractor would pay for all the timber in advance, before work started.
Cheers

No idea I'm afraid but I'm curious as to why you've specified a JCB Fastrac, as opposed to any other tractor?

I used it as a generic term for speedy tractor, much as one might say Hymac for a 360 degree excavator.

Ah, I see. I saw an MB Trac out on the road today - it always amazed me that JCB managed to beat a German company at their own game to become the generic term.

I was recently quoted £46/tonne for spruce sawlogs at the mill.

So standing timber would be that, less the cost of felling, extraction, transport and wastage... all of which are site specific.

No idea but there's a site with loads of timber adverts. Put 'woodlots' into search engine and you'll find it.
