What's the risk, other than explosion?
If you vent all the gas that'll vent, then unscrew the valve and fill the bottle with water, then explosion risk is minimal.

The one I spoke to seemed to be pragmatic, he knew which cylinders he couldn't touch and ones he could scrap.

Where could Calor have its depot? Can't seem to find out from the internet.

Ah yes. That puts things in perspective.
Next one that came my way was destined to become a downdraft gassifier, but now you've reminded me the risk, I'll have a re-think...

I knew someone who turned one into a wood burner for his caravan but not something I would want to try personally. Pete

If you think of a woodburner as a box to have a fire in, then they are quite easy to make.
However, if you think a wood burner is a sophisticated device with cunning airflows to maximise the efficiency of combustion then it is a whole different game.

Most petrol stations also sell bottled LPG. Some of them will be Calor stockists. You can return them to there.

I've made them into chimenia's. Opened the valve to clear any gas and then took the valve assembly out (not that easy). Fill with water and leave for a day or two, then using a 100mm grinder cut the hole size required for the fire box. Then cut a bigger hole where the valve assembly came out off and weld a chimney on (road sign posts are a good size). Then weld three legs on a the required height. Not pretty but very effective.

i have 3 in the bin shed at work a 15kg orange one and 2 x blue maybe 4kg ones. im wanting to make them into something so was thinking of a firebox or bbq or a stove of some sort even just to boil the kettle at field. so whats the procedure of making them safe?

I'm told that the sort of bottles BOC supply their gas in - Oxygen atc for welding make excellent tube headers for small water tube boilers (The sort of thing you want in your steam launch) There is a small WTB abandoned next to the Canalside Café at Bradford on Avon if inspiration is needed

just find someone who sells the full bottles they normally ask for a deposit so that they are returned. Hence if offered some for free they should smile and thank you for the extras.

Most stockists will take their brand of bottles back. Some might take back other brands.
I've cut up 2 bottles. First was a bugger to remove valve - steel bar thru bottom of bottle (to brace it) and scaffold tube on wrench. 2nd bottle valve came off with just wrench.
I've cut them straight after filling with water - no air = no explosion
The water that results from bottle is pretty nasty as are the fumes when you first burn them (unless you remove all the paint)

There was a tv prog about a surfing couple who started a sustainable lifestyle of surfing ang making redundant gas cylinders into wood burners, selling in the top stores in UK. they were very popular, doubtless still going! Based in Cornwall, but were fetching these things from all over the UK from the various sites where they were sold off after they became unsuitable for their intended gas holding purpose.
