I'm a bit rusty..

I've not really been growing anything rather than some bits and pieces in pots during the summer but I'd like to start being much more productive growing my food.

My questions are

a) What seeds can I now sow that will give me a crop before the winter?

b) What seeds can a sow that will give me a winter crop or early spring crop

I have a small plastic sheet greenhouse so I can grow a limited amount inside that if needs be.

Was rather hoping to sow some spinach and kale... would that be possible?

Thanks so much in advance

C xx

oriental greens, rocket, lettuce, onions.
A few spuds in a greenhouse for early pots with your xmas dinner.
Spinach yes & kale for young leaves.
Also chard for baby leaves.

Radish as well C, spinach would be good, swiss chard & carrots worth a try too. Good luck!

Ohh and garlic too! Though it will not be ready until July 2014, but worth planting though.

If you can get seedlings of leeks they are worth trying.

Also spring cabbage seeds for outdoor planting and winter lettuce in your greenhouse.

I attach a lot of importance to Japanese Onions, growing "Keepwell F1" from seed. Japanese onions must be sown after the longest day. The earlier you sow them, the bigger the onion, the later, the less likely they are to bolt. Over the years I have found that the 14th of August is the optimum date.

These onions are "ripe" about 6 weeks before the Dutch types, just when the last of your onion store is getting past it. However, they don't store very well ("Keepwell" will store right through 'til November, and that's it!)

I grow a few in pots in the greenhouse for an even earlier crop.

Hi Carolyn! Nice to "meet" you properly . I've been reading your fab blog for ages. I think I may even have posted a link to it on here a year or two back. Best wishes for your new life in the UK.

Re seeds - what has been said. It's a good time to sow mizuna, rocket etc. Sarah Raven has a winter salad mix of seeds https://www.sarahraven.com/shop/autumn-winter-salad-mix.html.
