There won't be any live wasps in it unless there is a queen hiding in there to keep warm, so at least you won't have a problem with it this year. You are finding that bees, and other animals and insects, never read the beekeeping books. They even confuse the most experienced beekeepers at times.

wasp hornet the oval hole does look a bit hornety

I think it's a wasp nest. It's quite small as well.

The more I look at it the worse I feel. I know Im a beekeeper and I love my bees, but wasps...yeuch! and hornets - well thats for Room 101.

Flying and having multiple sting capacity is nature playing rough. Saying that it was quite ok having wasps in the roof of our bungalow when we lived in Merseyside. They went to all next doors noisy smelly barbecues to which we weren't invited

We have hornets in the woods and they don't bother us much except when the queens are looking for a suitable place to set up home. We have to evict them from the working area as we don't really want a hornets nest in any of our sheds. They sound scary, but they just hawk around and ignore us.

When we stayed in Asturias there was a hornet nest in the ceiling above the bathroom. Fortunately I had a roll of gaffer tape with me and was able to tape over the holes. Live and let live is all very well but huge stingy things coming out of the ceiling while you're in the bath leaves you feeling a bit vulnerable.

my live and let live policy has been stretched beyond let live a couple of times .when up on a roof demolishing a kitchen extension i had to jump for it and still had to go back and finish the job ,that was one time ,rewiring an attic was another .

Up a ladder is not exactly the best place to be when you find a wasps nest Dpack. They tend to be more of a problem than hornets. Although hornets can sting I think they tend to bite first as they have very strong jaws. As I have said, we have had them hawking round where we are working and they haven't caused us any problems.
