I have just picked pounds and pounds of cherry plums from someone's garden (they had thought they were cherries which would have been more exciting, but still..)

Am making a batch of jam. Any other suggestions for what to do with them? And are they any good for jam?

Anyone dried them ever?

Yep, we make hundreds of fruit scrolls from them pureed and dried in sheets but they dry well on their own halved and destoned.

So do you cook them in a bit of water and then purée, as you would for a fruit cheese?

I was wondering about drying them whole and then destoning when part dried, as the instructions with my dehydrator say you can do with some things.

Have tried cutting them in half but they are on the small side perhaps and quite juicy so it will be very very time consuming and messy to do it that way before drying.

And do you use a dehydrator for fruit leathers?

Yep they are a pain to process but if you dry them stone in i find it impossable to get it out, its easier to do it fresh but hwve a go, it might be ok for you but i prefer to stone before dryig for such small fruits, a cherry stoner might do the job to save cutting tuem all in half.

I am going to make a plum chutney this afternoon so they would prob be good for something like that. They will still need stoning though.

Will have to see if any are left after the storms.

Still without an oven, so the last batch were stewed and eaten with custard.

Saving the stones to try and grow some from seed.

I'm fed up of ours, I've been told they are Mirabells but they're just a squishy mess on the path. They're all right up the tree where I can't get them

Thanks all. Made some jam (fishing out stones during cooking, like damsons only worse!). And stoned the rest which are drying but taking ages. They are tasty and like that these were free but don't think I'd give one garden space when you could have a better plum! They are certainly prolific though - and the juice was tasty.

And yes, I think wine may be next if we pick any more...
