Can anyone recommend a small incubator? Cost not an issue, reliability, longevity and good results are much more important.

I can't see us needing room for more than 12 eggs but we'd want to hatch chicken, duck, goose and possibly eggs.

I assume if an incubator has room for 12 eggs it'll work perfectly well if you only fill it with 6?

Any other essential kit required for looking after chicks?

a non recommendation

my octagon was a bit random at temperature and humidity even though it was a top end model for approx 18 eggs.hard to clean and over complex imho.not a well spent £300ish,it did a roll thing to turn the eggs but a pencil mark and turn by hand works .

grannie had a box with a lightbulb under it ,a thermometer and a vent to adjust the temp.that worked for 70 odd years.

I do recomment the brinsea oct20 - also have a 10 - both work well

yes you can put less eggs in - we pull out the blank eggs on candling and continue with less eggs no problem

having an automatic turner is a nice luxury and means you don't have to think about it if you go out for the day

other essentials for raising chicks - a heatlamp or similar - or a broody hen

I liked my RCOM 20 Pro until it broke down. Just rely on a really simple Novital 40egg model now. Has auto turn, but you have to remember to switch it off. Also needs the entire bottom flooding with water prior to hatching to ensure the humidity stays up. I think they do a smaller one of the same.

I like Brinsea. Only used older models, not the octogon but hatchmasters & hatchmaker. Solid well built easy to clean & reliable thermostats.
Plus when I have needed bits they stock parts for all their old models.
My big hatchmaster has got to be thirty + years & I can still order most spares for it.

I have a Rcom King Suro which has been very good and reliable. All automatic and very easy to use and set. Can use with goose, quail duck and even other species. Nice and compact. Can get spares and easy to clean after use. Not too bad a price either. I have recommended them to others through work and they have liked this incubator a lot too.

Don't wait for me to make up my mind, I'm in no rush and haven't decided what I want.

Bibbster, if Pilsbury isn't interested you're very welcome to pop up an advert here when you're ready.

Brinsea fan here but I also like novital and the king suro.

I get stuff from Wheatcroft Poultry these days. Avoid Ascott like the plague.

Thank you....

Pilsbury, I think it takes at least 20 eggs, so a dozen or so should be quite comfortable?
I have looked on E-bay, new ones are £120ish, used £90 ish, so how about £75? not sure how I would get it to you though
