The latest version of Flash (209) resolves these issues, we had a minor panic this morning about this very thing

i half suspect that the vulnerabilities of flash can only be exploited if general security is a bit slack.between spy block, avast pro, defender, ghosty, script blocker ,adblock ,malaware and avoiding the most "popular"themes the risk is fairly low(i hope)

using html5 has a good reputation so far

i spose such matters require adjustments most of which that lot will do before i know there was a risk

ps i still feel the need to use linux + a few clever filters and onion flavored stuff etc if im looking for the content of super injunctions etc etc and even that can take a bit of a zapping if the SI or whatever has high level backing.

most folk dont go to those lengths and get a problem from using "celebrity news",free software "specialist sites" etc etc .

back in the 1990's it was easy and moderately safe to visit almost anything with a phone line and pooter in the building

I talked to a friend who is a security computer specialist for a council....he suggested Silverlight, and thought that some systems were going to stop supporting flash...mainly because of its security problems

if your pooter still works after installing silverlight (it comes bundled with ms update stuff or it can be had a standalone download) it might be an option, for me it conflicts with both my os set up and with my multi layer security stuff.

it took me a few hours to discover why the thing was crashing and silverlight is now forbidden from installing itself

i suspect it works well on mainframe/workstation rigs and perhaps in modern ms os's with simple security stuff

it nearly replaced my pooter until i uninstalled it and everything worked properly again.

Silverlight isn't in anyway the same as Flash, it's a Microsoft proprietary product, it does a similar thing to Flash but it's not necessary anymore as we now have HTML5 and rich media built into the standard as native.

The main issue is that there are lots of Rich clients out there that use flash particularly in the financial industry and it's going to take time for it to die a death.

So not using Microsoft, Silverlight wouldn't be an option for meanyway

A modern mainstream browser should be all that you need.

All web pages use HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) as the underlying page description language used to instruct the web browser on how to display the page.

HTML is standards based and early versions were only capable of doing very simple things. To make up for these short comings web browser vendors invented (notably Netscape and Microsoft) their own add-ons and features which weren't standards compliant but which allowed users to do things they otherwise couldn't. However, as these new features weren't standardised things got really bad resulting in notices on websites along the lines of "best viewed using xyx browser".

HTML 5 is the latest version of the HTML standards which are intended to be defacto but it won't be finished until 2022. However it does allows us to do the things that we previously needed plugins for such as playing audio files or video.
