Use the copper strip to prevent worms escaping (I farm them for fishing), but would like to find a cheap source.

That would also work for a worm bin then, as people often have problems with worms escaping from garden wormaries. We might get someone to try that and post back.

I bought mine from a craft shop a few years ago as I noticed it was significantly cheaper. It's also quite fine (5mm I think) which doesn't seem to make it any less effective and means it's either less obtrusive or you can do it two or thre times to make it pretty (this is after all thread with a lot of girls on it! ).

www.hobbicraft.co.uk in Leeds, I don't think they're related to the annoying adverts, they were there first as far as I know. It doesn't say here how long their rolls are but I think it's 10 metres or so - we still have loads left.

ooohhh - have ordered a catalogue (nice bathtime reading!) It doesn't say how long the tape was but it's only 3.95, and in Harrod horticultural it was 10 quid for 4m - if bugs had loads left, it must be better value.

By the way Bugs, if I spend hundreds of pounds in there IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT!

(My Baldwins order came today - but that was Fluffykitten's fault! )

Sorry but I think the Hobbiecraft in leeds is related to the annoying ad. If I remember right they are part of a nationwide group of craft superstores, and yes you probably will spend a fortune in there.
The copper tape will probably be in the Glass painting dept if you want to nip straight there to avoid temptation.

The hobbicraft that Bugs reccommeded isn't the same as the blue and yellow hobbycraft chain (haven't seen the ads though, so don't know which they're for) As far as I know they don't do web ordering or a catalogue, and are a bit 'kitty'. They do lots of stamping, cardmaking, painting, tapestry and kits, and lots of bits and pieces, but aren't a patch on the little craft places, if you can still find them. Bugs' hobbicraft website loots great - I probably will find lots of lovely things I didn't know I wanted!

The site that Bugs recommended is an independant group. Our local craft shop uses them and they have some very good things. We got my DH the card making chest for Christmas.

Independant shops are closing fast as the big chains take the business, My family ran a craft shop for about 8 years and it was fantastic fun trying all the new products first and doing the training but we just couldnt compete on prices. Why is it the people with the most money to spend ( big chains) get bigger discounts and so lower selling prices ( and yes i know its just economics but it makes me mad we had to give up the shop!)

I agree, I always try and use someone independent if I can, and I always give them cash. I am very lucky in that we have an excellent hardware/kitchen shop, stationery/craft shop, bookshop and bakers in town, but no butchers or greengrocers. No dairy, but we do have a milkman. Can't win them all.

Self adhesive copper tape in various widths is used in soldered foil stained glass work (Tiffany lampshades and the like) and should
be available from any stained glass supplier. Try www.tempsfordstainedglass.co.uk who can supply it on mail order

I can vouch for copper tape - our hostas were untouched last year.
This year we're going to incorporate it into raised beds - splitting old 15mm water pipe with a bandsaw and nailing strips of it along the tops of the edges. I'll keep you posted as to whether or not that works.
