Newborn lambs are not liking it much either.

Here's a picture from a few weeks ago of the umbrella I hodge-podged over a few of my raised beds.

Good idea Slim.

We had snow showers on and off yesterday too. We had a very mild winter, but we are also having a cool spring, so it hasn't actually warmed up very much. I am still sometimes having to wear my winter trousers, which I try to avoid as far as possible as they can be far too warm for me if it gets warm in the sun.

I have some leek and cabbage seedlings that I am putting out during the day, but they had to come in yesterday as I thought snow a bit much for them. Haven't even started my peas and beans, as they need to go out when they are ready, and if the weather doesn't warm up they could get very leggy.

I'm fed up of snow. I keep having to dodge flurries when I'm trying to get the garden sorted out. It's practically May for goodness' sake! At least it won't matter quite so much that I was a month behind anyway.

We were out late last night and the gritters were out on the roads. It was only about 3 deg C when we got in, so may well have got down to 0 later. Snow flurries again yesterday.

There was a hard frost here, yesterday morning. Still around when we went to school at nine. It was only about three degrees this morning when we went out. Sunny though so hopefully it will be warm enough go out later.

just realized the forum/thread combination....grow your own snow ..

plenty of the stuff up here...ours has temporarily gone, but Arctic air means temperatures between -5 and -8 last night and colder tonight.
snow gates are still shut in a few of the highland routes, and I wouldn't head towards Eskdalemuir in the south....

It's -3 C here right now, which should be the low point for the week. I think we're pulling into a slow warming trend, back to spring!

I'm hoping so too. Temperatures are looking set to rise next week, although the nights are still looking cold.

Last night's cold had more effect than I thought. Went out to my hodgepodge greenhouse and everything was frozen solid inside. Hopefully not too much permanent damage.

Cold of this morning was 27 F, tomorrow will hopefully not be lower than 26 F. (This is a situation where I feel the Fahrenheit scale really is more useful than Celsius, otherwise I'd be saying -3 and -3, and that one degree F can make a difference)

Guess I'll be adding row cover to my plastic covered beds....

Here's hoping the peas I'm breeding are doing okay under just row cover..... Probably going to double that up for tonight as well.

I was thinking this evening (as I was wrapping my chillies and peppers up in fleece and making plans for the bank holiday weekend) that years ago, Gardeners' world was doing a trial on how much protection fleece gives and if it's more effective doubled. Does anyone know if there are any results anywhere? It must have been ages ago. Is GW still on?

Yes, Gardeners World is still on but I haven't watched it for years, so no idea what it is like now. It makes sense that doubled fleece helps because there is also a layer of air trapped between the layers, so that will insulate further.

I think we had some rain here in the night, and not sure what the temperature is; it certainly doesn't feel very warm this morning, but would be surprised if it went below 0 C as there was cloud cover for at least part of the night.

I checked my raised beds yesterday and had to earth up some early potatoes, but no damage seemed to have been done by the previous nights frost thank goodness. The seeds are keeping their heads down, so hope they come up in the end this year. They didn't last year.

You would expect it to be warm enough for most things by 1st May, but this spring has been very cold. Glad I didn't go out for May Day dawn this morning as it must have been really cold. As a morris musician playing the violin I have had enough left hand in the pocket between tunes dawns.
