What is the best way to set up an on-line sign up form?
Something on the web to collect a few details and store them somewhere reasonably secure.

A simple html form on a webpage with a bit of javascript to validate the input. Then have it call a script (perl, php or similar) to insert the input into a mysql database (or just a text file).
Of course you need a website hosted somewhere first (with the capability to run scripts and mysql). Do oyu have a website already?

If you have one then the form and script is a simple matter. PM me for more details.

Kind of, but I couldn't get scripts to work on it, so I may be better starting with a new one.

I've been pointed at wix.com which appears to be a free webhosting with the relevant tools on board.
I'm wondering what is the catch, and assuming adverts and limited bandwidth, but that seems fair enough.

Anybody know of them or had any tales of woe?

I've never used Wix but they get varying reviews

What/who do you want to sign up? Perhaps ww.signup.com may do what you want (I know nothing about them)

www.signup.com

There is a free model in their pricing structure

Thanks, that looks quite promising... except that it insists on asking for phone numbers: I don't like having to give out phone numbers on t'internet, so I don't think it proper for me to ask for them.
