what makes the heartwood of plane trees go a rather lovely but very wrong lilac colour?

whatever it is has infected quite a few round here and the local tree keepers have been culling the infected.

it seems to have got about half of them along the river bank and although they looked ok to me i guess they noticed something wrong visually or the woodpecker machine gave a "oh dear" result.

rather nice mature but not first generation trees .

No idea. I suggest to ask on arbtalk.co.uk I would do, but not tonight...

ETA: first guess: Massaria disease.

Without doing a lot of research, I don't know. Doesn't look like Massaria though as the wood goes pale and open.
