There was a halt on building more houses round our way for a bit because of the nitrogen enrichment, but think that has been 'sorted' now. The company that deals with our sewage has been fined very large amounts of money for discharges, and is now trying to build a plant that will recycle water. As there are a lot of older properties whose sewers and storm water drains all go down the same way, any heavy rain causes a massive increase in sewage, but diluted. The new plant is supposed to process the water and clean it, then return it to a reservoir that is currently being built. There is opposition to both the reservoir and the recycling, but as the land for the reservoir was purchased over 50 years ago, and having looked at the plans, the recycling plant looks fine to me, I think some people are misunderstanding things. |

Countryfile usually has a bit about a current topic, and they are often quite interesting.
Going to to a related, in a way, subject. There has been an announcement that the government is giving money in grants for forestry training. As the amounts vary from £150 to £3000, this isn't going to pay for any serious education, but will be useful for short courses. The objective is to get people to go into the industry, but as it has been put, who wants to go into a dirty, dangerous industry for minimum pay and no security. It is also a way of life, as to make ends meet you often have to work antisocial hours or days when conditions are right and not work when they aren't. |
