There was a halt on building more houses round our way for a bit because of the nitrogen enrichment, but think that has been 'sorted' now. The company that deals with our sewage has been fined very large amounts of money for discharges, and is now trying to build a plant that will recycle water. As there are a lot of older properties whose sewers and storm water drains all go down the same way, any heavy rain causes a massive increase in sewage, but diluted. The new plant is supposed to process the water and clean it, then return it to a reservoir that is currently being built. There is opposition to both the reservoir and the recycling, but as the land for the reservoir was purchased over 50 years ago, and having looked at the plans, the recycling plant looks fine to me, I think some people are misunderstanding things.

large amounts to us, maybe not so large when the industry has extracted over £70 billion as dividends and directors bonuses since privatization whilst investing a fraction of the takings and systematically polluting cos it is cheap

No, but it proves the point that there was widespread pollution occuring.

yep it does prove the point, anecdote suggests increasing pollution over a decade and ongoing

i like eating fresh fish, rivers are out, maybe some high small streams and lochs in unpopulated places are still viable

the coast around here is also off the menu

maybe i will have a try on Braystones Beach
that is not as daft as it might seem, considering some of the other options at the mo

I would demand PFAS test results for current effluent before accepting any recycled wastewater......

Our water company has a very good record for clean water Slim. There are also very strict rules in the UK about drinking water quality. The reservoir this is going into is in the joint ownership of our water company and one of the large ones who's record isn't good, but from what I have seen of the plans they have thought of most things.

Most water water treatment plants are dumping PFAS into waterways..... So I would demand actual numbers

I will look into that. I can't see the supply company accepting it as there are levels of pollutants that are allowed, and above that the water supply could have to stop.

They've already ran off with £72bn of our money, left our rivers full of sewage and abstracted local chalk streams to a point of extinction and to top it all off you're about to face the biggest increase in water bills in 20 years.

And gov approved it.

Our water supply company is quite reasonable. They have always been a relatively small local private company so have their own interests at heart about pollution in their supply. The sewage company is a completely different kettle of dead fish however.

Did anyone see the section on the dead crab and lobster on Countryfile last night? Gave quite a reasonable assessment of the situation I thought.

yep, the basic facts of loads of stuff unexpectedly dead needs explanation rather than don't look don't see, too complicated to tell what happened, occam's razor and cui bono could not possibly apply, nothing to see move on

silt and mirrors sort of cancel each other out

the "experts" with labs, redundant crab pot owners, the beach wise and the investigative journos(stop smirking private eye) are presenting compelling evidence that this matter and closely related issues do require further attention

CF was surprisingly open-minded to even mention the situation

predicting the past is difficult, however this will be continuing in the future as at the mo it is maxidredge to get the deep dock functional to create cash flow

the business aspects are filththier than any potential legacy chemicals

ps i had a remote peek at braystones, i might do it a week on a pebble beach is rather appealing

there are a few places on that coast i might not want to stir mud(perhaps not the most obvious ones), but the sea water and food chain is actually fairly clean in scintillation counter terms afaik, im too old to worry about a bit extra anyway(3 yrs background in one scan, so what, my codling ate shrimps, so what)

Countryfile usually has a bit about a current topic, and they are often quite interesting.

Going to to a related, in a way, subject. There has been an announcement that the government is giving money in grants for forestry training. As the amounts vary from £150 to £3000, this isn't going to pay for any serious education, but will be useful for short courses. The objective is to get people to go into the industry, but as it has been put, who wants to go into a dirty, dangerous industry for minimum pay and no security. It is also a way of life, as to make ends meet you often have to work antisocial hours or days when conditions are right and not work when they aren't.
