Had a letter from them this morning saying that they will be in our area at the end of the month and want to look at my breeding and movement records

So far, my records consist of a folder in which I keep all the movement licenses and a little book in which the record consists of:

Weaners bought on (date)
Wormed (date)
Sent to abattoir (date)

I've just started another one for the sheep, which is empty apart from the bought on date as they were wormed and sprayed just before I bought them a month ago.
We don't sell any livestock and the only breeding so far has been hatching a few chooks. As far as I can see, those are all the records I need, but can anyone tell me if I have missed anything?

What about medicines record book? Even if you've not used any, it might be a good idea to set one up to show them...

Would that not be covered by the "Wormed (date)" entry, or do I need to literally keep a list of all the medecines that I buy?

I'll find the 'column headings' you need to set one up later, but they're probably listed on the DEFRA website. Off for a bit now....

OK you can buy an Animal Medecine Recird Book from, for example, Gofarmer but it doesn't have to be a printed one: I rule columns in a smallish book.

Headings MUST be:
- Date medicine purchased
- Name of medecine
- Identity of animal treated
- Date treatment started
- Date treatment finished
- Quantity used
- Length of withdrawal period
- Batch number
- Earliest date after treatment when animal can be sold
- Name of person or vet administering medecine.

ear tag numbers for sheep .... think all sheep born after 9 july 2005 must have a ear tag if over nine months old
for sheep and goats there is the flock or herd register , where all movement off and on your holding must be recorded sample here:

cattle there is a register online

(this is what we have to do but at home we farm about 2000 sheep and 300 cattle so im not sure if there are other things needed for a small holding etc )

this might help for movement records of animals

and this is taken from the trading standards :

On farm cattle breeding records

The following records must be kept:

* Date of birth
* Ear tag number of the calf
* Breed
* Sex
* Dam's identification number

* Date of the movement onto or off a holding
* Ear tag number of the calf
* Breed
* Sex
* Age or date of birth when known
* Holding from which moved (including the name and address of the person from whom delivery was taken)
* Holding to which moved (including the name and address of the person taking delivery)
* Date of any deaths and where the animal is sent for disposal
* Date of any replacement ear tags*

Judith I have emailed you a spreadsheet that I use for all above. I had a visit from them 8 weeks ago and everything went well. In fact I knew that there were 2 faults, but decided to leave in and as you may guess, they didn't pick-up on them! Regards Wombat

Yes. ‘Fraid so. When you apply for your flock no. you are sent a mountain of paperwork and it all seems rather confusing at first. After you have floundered along for a bit, the mists gradually clear. Eventually!
