Last year my family and two others held a sloe gin making competition which was judged by my dear old mum.
Yours truly came third.
Do you fancy playing for the Downsizer trophy ?

I've got a small cup I'd be prepared to have engraved.

If enough people were interested we could nominate a judge each year and then we could post small samples of our brew for ajudication.
The judge would have to be of impecable honesty and have good taste of course.
To start the ball rolling ( and I havent said a word to him yet by the way ) my nomination as judge for the 2006 or would it be 2007 competition would be gil.
Any takers , please make themselves known on this thread.

Depends when you run it. All of last year's is gone, and this year's is nowhere near ready yet.

I'm not an expert Sean but I reckon it would have to be this years stuff but judged early next year. I'd take advice on when .

Only made sloe vodka this year.

But . . . I do have my first ever effort of sloe gin that's a 3 year old vintage - does that meet the competition rules?

Happy to judge this . Entries to be in end January 07, probably. Say around Candlemas (2nd February approx). Brighten up the darker months of winter.

Re older vintages than current (06). Some folk say sloe gin improves with keeping; others that the taste dulls. Those with pre-06 entries are welcome, though if there is a noticeable difference (and enough people enter the older version), I might split the competition into two categories : nouveau and vintage.

I'd nominate Jema to judge next year's.

This does sound fun, though might I suggest the judging is done by a panel, not of us here, but of Gil's selection. My experience is that the sweetness factor is quite a personal thing, so we would get a better result if more were doing the judging.

Excellent

I know it's very early, but what's the best way to transport it up to Gil, and how much is needed for judging purposes?

Whisky minatures are often 5cl, a wine glass is I think 12cl.

wine minatures are often 18cl.

Personally I think 5cl would be a tough amount to judge, 12cl would be ample but quite a chunk perhaps of some peoples total brew!

I'm in! Though I need to get picking tomorrow as we are off on holiday for two weeks, so tomorrow is the only time I'll get.

Perhaps the quantities judged should be fixed. Otherwise I'll happily send off a couple of litres to see if I can influence the judging!
