B*llocks. But the Beeb site has said that he has won according to projections made from partial results. Let's hope that they've got it wrong.

And that is the bizarre french way.
I was in Paris the night Chirac was elected, first time round. It was fairly close, like 52/48, but they called the result on tv about a minute after the last polls closed, and victory was conceded by Jospin in about 15 minutes. As the count went on, the decimals of the share of the vote floated about slightly, but the result was in no doubt and the street party started immediately.
There was quite a party too. All very good humoured and much 'safer' than any such occasion could be expected to be in the UK. OK there were CRS (with automatics) all over the place, but they were totally redundant.
It was a happy party because Chirac had seemingly promised an end to the high unemployment that was afflicting France. {It still is, 12 years later.}
