Starting work on some new veg beds this weekend.

What;s the best way for removing turf over a largish area, say 10m X 10m. Can you hire machinery for the job?

You can get a turf stripper, I've seen them on the ground force type programs. But that's not a very large area if the turf is soft.

Are you going to reuse it or stack it to make a good loam?

Stack it for loam. just checked out the stripper. 38 quid for a weekend, I may as well spend 50quid hiring a rotivator whilst I'm at it.

Oh yes, you can indeed hire turf cutters, wonderful tools, however I would recommend trying to get one for just after its been a bit wet rather than as my brother did, when its baked hard as nails!

What happens then is you skate across the surface whilst trying to exert downward pressure,Funny to watch, not so funny to do.

Also try and get it delivered if you can. The one we had was SOOO heavy.

I lost more of my sanity when I used a rotovator on my lawn trying to create a veg patch. The thing hates turf, works best on soil. Bloody hard work even so!...Left me thinking it would have been easier to use a shovel!
