I've just found a bag of rotted veg (yum yum) in one of the outbuildings. It must have been put there some time ago with the intention of being moved on to the pig pen. Anyhow, piggy never got it and now it is absolutely riddled with maggots and stinking the place out.

Just wondered (without getting too close) if anyone can advise on how to get rid of the blighters before they start buzzing around as flies?

I am not a fisherman (yet) and even if I was I doubt I would put one of these under me tongue

Please somebody help!

take a long stick, scoop up the bag on the end, take it far away from the house into a field or the woods, and spread teh content on the ground and watch the birds having a field day. I think.

Hmmmmm! ... and could you recommend a suitable home made mask for the stench? Speaking of birds ... do you thing the hens would sort them out or may this lead to an infestation. I won't risk it. Poorly hens is something I can well do without.

Thanks for the reply tho' Judy

The long stick was also meant to keep your nose at some distance. Maybe walk with the wind direction, should help, and a bit of essential oil, perfume or perfumed cream under your nose.
I can't see any problem with the chicken eating the maggots, they would probably be picking up all sorts of similar things when forraging. Blackbirds and similar might also go for anything small and wriggely.

Hens do a fine job, can't say I've ever seen a blowfly infestation of hens (they'd just eat them). I've also found the pigs will eat them too (maggots that is, although the chickens too if they could), if they get chance
