I am looking for two old, blackened and used brood frames to fit a National hive if anyone on here has any spare.

Quite happy to pay for them along with the postage costs.

Please PM me if you have any available as I'm not having much luck through my local BKA....argggghhhhhhh

Thanks

Cris

I don't have any, I am afraid, but what do you want them for?

They're the best thing for attracting a passing swarm between now and early/mid July.

Take a new National hive (leave off the super and just have the brood box with floor, roof etc)....add a couple of old/used/blackened brood frames and check frequently for new occupants!!

Better than any of the chemical nonsense that the main suppliers stock.

Does that really work?? Just caught (..and subsequently lost!) a swarm yesterday, and I put them in a Langstroth Brooder with foundation wax, but they buzzed off after just one night!

Old comb (i.e previously drawn out) is supposed to be the best thing for hiving a swarm - Did you put a feed on for them? Did you see the Queen? If you missed the Queen it could be the reason they left - they will have probably gone back to their original colony

Jo, am a complete novice!! Neew foundation wax. Was advised to make feeder up, so that got put on - didnt see the queen, so it could be that. What a waste, eh? Apparently bees are difficult to get hold of in Kent.

It should have been OK - but having learnt my lesson the other day - I would have hived them - made sure they had some syrup on them and then shut them in for a couple of days - If they couldn't get out - they would start building comb and hopefully, the Queen, if she was there would have started laying - but its all so easy with hindsight!

I've heard about the problem in Kent - the convention I went to a couple of weeks ago had a speaker from Essex but who organises the pollination of the orchards in Kent - this year they were screaming out for hives as so many beekeepers had had losses

I'm sure I can find a couple.
Not sure how the post will treat them though.
I'll have a look & work out the postage.

Thank you all....I've now managed to get hold of some used brood frames - here's hoping we get some 'wanted guests' in the not too distant future!!
