Got a 4 gallon baby Burco boiler for £8 and a demijon for 50p.

Given my biggest pot had a 12 pint capacity, this will be great for the winemaking

Sounds like you may need to find a bigger house, Jema.

You must have a pretty extensive wine cellar by now

just curious jema...

do you have kids?

i'm wanting to take up winemaking but i've got a 3 year old and not a lot of out of the way places i could keep the wine so i'm just wondering how you keep nosy youngsters out of your wine?

My little one knows he doesn't like wine, so he concentrates his efforts on more worthwhile pursuits like raiding the fridge or the biscuit tin. I don't think we even had to warn him off it after we'd explained what it was.

Kids are 13 and 15, so know the score on wine.

We have had that problem with having kids round in general, when you have "downsizer" gear on display. The prospect of inquisitive kids and the 12" meat slicer has left me with hours of angst as to how I would ever get the kitchen floor clean again

It really is not that easy, and will depend on the kids, I have had a problem with my office equipment with hyperactive kids at a party. My fault in a sense for thinking my own childrens understanding about the office being basically offlimits would be enough when other kids were around.

with a 3 year old, you really cannot rely on any level of intelligent understanding, and have to take full responsibility yourself with physical barriers and and the common sense to realise that certain things are just going to have to *not* do.

if we ever do get around to making the wine i think i'd have to fit a lock to the outside of the big cupboard door, up high where she can't reach it (she's very bright, she'd figure out how to unlock it in a flash if it were at her eyelevel )

i know that most young kids get a wee taste of alcohol and don't like it but although we've never let her taste anything yet when she's had a sniff she's actually really wanted it and i think she may like it... she loves strong coffee best not to test that theory though, i wouldn't want to find out just how little alcohol it takes to poison a child

my dh was a bit worried about the sewing machine being left out so i sat her down and showed her what that needle does. then i let her practice pinning some fabric together with my dressmaking pins. i heard quite a few 'ouch, ow' etc and now she doesn't even look at them any more! i do make certain to keep the scissors and pins put away in a tricky to open box out of her reach when i'm not useing them and i keep the foot pedal off the floor so it can't accidentally be stepped on when it's not being used. but the machine is still out and we've not had any incidents... now if i could just keep her out of my fabric
