Phew, well done!

Traumatic moment isn't it . I was worried that the queen had somehow miraculously got away when I wasn't looking, despite sitting the nuc on top of the brood box for the transfer .

Well, I wont know until I get a chance to go through it properly. It wasn't warm enough to be hanging around looking for her, but I did want to get some food on them. So I went for it. They looked quite healthy, and there were plenty of them.

Next job is to turn the brood box round so the frames are across the hive "the warm way". But I was told to keep them oriented the same way as the nuc box to start with.

Thank you Snowball and Frewen for your supportive comments.

It's probably not complicated when you've done it a long time, but it's quite hair raising doing it for the first time.

Come and visit, then you can see mine and see what you think.

This book is quite a good introduction. Not as heavy as some of the others, but concise and containing most of what it seems you need to know as a beginner.

Well done.
Why do you want to turn them the warm way?
I have never bothered & figure if that was the best way manufacturers would put entrances in the side of nuc boxes not the end.
Definately get some feed in them, not much nectar at the mo till the ivy blossoms especially with the wet weather.

The book that got me through the early stages.

link to book
Out of date now (Pre varroa) but still a good reference.

Because the chaps up at the apiary said it was better. Mainly because it's easier to stand behind the hive and lift the frames out if they are that way I think.
