Well before that, by all accounts you have a lot of sausage making to do, my friend! Good luck!! And I'm sure you 'll feel very proud when your first roast goes on the table

It isn't surprising that you have mixed feelings about sending them to the abbatoir. The stark reality can be a shock to the system.
Going to the butcher and buying a chop is easy, taking responsibility for the welfare and life of that chop then deciding exactly when and how it becomes a chop is hard. I take my hat of to you and anybody who is prepared to do it.

Jammer, I went through exactly the same feelings a week ago - the worst bit by far was loading them up into the trailer. When you get to the abattoir, it is too late to change your mind. I hope it all goes smoothly there.

When they come back from the butcher, you will have far too much to do to worry. We spent at least two hours with that diagram from HFW's Meat book, trying to make sense of the "pigsaw" that came back, making up goodie bags for various family members. Then comes the sausage making...

As for the eating, select your favourite joint, cook it long and slow in the oven while you are making sausages, then sit down, drink a fond toast to your porkers and enjoy the best pork you have ever had. It WILL be fabulous.

Then you will start planning the next pigs!

All you can do now is to respect the pig: don't waste any of it. I can recommend brawn, and a very elderly neighbour has just given me a faggots recipe. Having said that, I haven't actually got any pigs yet, but I'm hoping to change that soon. I have another reason for getting pigs and then having them slaughtered: I have a neighbour who "knows" I'll never kill them. I think he thinks I'm some daft city girly. Just wait until he's eating our first sausages...

Totally agree, Mochyn - there's a lot to be said for having respect for your livestock and not wasting any of the meat. (says her the non-meat eater!)

I take my hat off to anyone who is compassionate enough about the welfare of their animals and let's them lead as happy a life as possible with as little stress as possible. The end product (post abbatoir) is your reward.

Me, I'd end up with far too many 'pets'

cheers for the support guys

All went well today...

We arrived at the abattoir for 9.30 and had left by 9:50. Wasn't feeling my best this morning when we left. But when we had got there and reversed the trailer up to the entrance, droped the back down, unloaded the pigs and finally closed the gate on them there was a bit of regret. Once the trailer's back was up and we pulled away from the gates, (for the next lot) it was paper work time and this seemed to be the moment that I realised, what was done was done and i had done the best i could of!! This is one of the reasons for me keeping pigs and something i'm going to have to get used to...

As for now... I have spent the afternoon getting wet walking around the Royal Bath and West.. My legs just about to give up on me but feeling better and knackered

Totally agree with respecting the pig.. something i have always done.. cos i'm sure they would win a fight if they wanted

Hi Jammer,
I used to keep pigs and would now if circumstances were right. I found it very hard the first and to be honest everytime I took them to the abbatoir. What decent person wouldn't? I consoled myself, as you should do, with the fact that I gave my piggies a good life before the end. Pigs are the best! I love em.

Hi Peter / Jamie

Just had a look at your website. You're doing a great job - the pigs look very good indeed. Stick with downsizer .... some of us will need your advise when it comes to "le chop" i'm sure.

We got our first pig in April and he is doing mighty fine. We expect to receive delivery (or go-collect) our sow imminently. We intend to keep the sow as company for our porker and when the time comes it will mean that the kids still have a pig to feed that way. Hopefully we will breed off the sow and raise our own piglets next season.

Keep us updated on how things are going at your end.

Regards

Simon
