It really works Mrs N, and it has antiseptic and antifungal properties too, so is good for the odd outbreak of candida albicans, if you get my drift.

I thought gin contained something that repels things, or is it the tonic? Best have some gin in it anyway for the antibacterial properties.

Wasn't gin invented to make the tonic water bareable to drink? or was it the other was round?

Juniper berries are supposed to be quite an effective contraceptive though.

I can quite understand that. I'm told that when I've drunk too much gin I'm not attractive in the slightest

Something with citronella? It seems to work with most biters.

I think gin's supposed to be an abortifacient rather than a contraceptive IIRC.

My mum made an anti midge potion based around tea tree oil - it even worked for my dad walking teh west highland way in late summer.

Unfortunately, tea tree oil is the only ingredient I can remember, but I'll ask at the weekend.

Yes, tea tree is effective, and lavender too, so you might find, Mrs N, that your wash keeps them at bay as well.

Other good 'uns are citronella, fennel, neem, and eucalyptus, and all of the above form the basis of my horsey fly repellent. They're mixed with cold tea and vinegar. Mind you if you use this on yourself you'll repel your mates as well as the midgeys!!

gin was put in the tonic to make the tonic more drinkable, and tonic has quinine, which is good for malaria.
