I just received 2 chickens for my birthday! Unfortunately - I know nothing about them!
I'm told I have an Eiser Brown - 5 months old. I've looked on several websites for info on this breed but can't find anything. Is there a different name for Eiser Browns?
Also we would like to get more but don't know what breed to get. We want them for eggs - but we have 3 small children who think of them as pets. So we want a friendly breed. Any ideas?

One other thing - my neighbor gave us a chicken last night. It is a Rhode Island Red. Alot of it's feathers are gone and it has some bare spots on its neck and back. She's also somewhat aggressive to my other chicken. Will the feathers eventually grow back so she looks nicer? Also, will she settle down over a period of time and not be so aggressive since we only have a few and have plenty of room for them?

Thanks in advance for the info!

I have Sussex hens and they can be very tame and good with children but they are not the best layers.

Your old RIR hen has probably gone to the top of the pecking order and is putting the other hens in her place. She may just be moulting at the moment but it would be worth giving her a very good check over to make sure she's not got any lice, especially as she'll give them to the other hens.

Hi Lisa, Isa browns are a commercial hybrid developed for egg production, and they near as d*mn it the same as Warrens, Hi-Lines etc. They have several breeds in them really and the diffent main hatcheries develop their own strain over time. Meat birds you might hear of are often called Cobb or Ross.

If you type in commercial hatchery or Cecil Basen(sp) you can probably find out more.

The Rhodie will settle in time, I've got a collection of chickens of different ages and types and you normally get a few days of stand offs before they realise they are wasting their time and make friends.

3 will soon turn into ten or so though, because they are so lovely to have around, you'll be powerless to resist!
Have fun with them, that's the main thing.....
