Never buy shelves from B&Q.

On paper, it makes sense to do so. They seem like sturdy timber, they're cheap enough, the brackets you can buy to go with them (we got dovetail joint brackets) look good... But it transpires that the brackets aren't quite all the same size, they don't have the holes in the same place, and sometimes they split when you bring the two parts together. Oh, and the poxy little nails they provide for holding the shelves down onto the brackets, what's that all about? Give me some wood screws, damnit, I don't want things to fall apart on me. I've got some in, of course, but I should have all the bits I need there in the kit.

*sigh*

I have three up. Five to go. A trip to B&Q for a replacement part which in turn needs to be varnished like the rest before I can finish, though.

Next time, I'm doing it myself properly, or I'm using WAAY simpler brackets that can't have anything wrong with them.

Not used that type but I put up some of their track shelving which was simple enough. Not the most attractive solution but it's only an office. My only quibble was that they only carried about 10 brackets of each size. As each large shelf needs 4 brackets you can only put up two shelves and then have to wait for them to reorder. I queried this at the 'help' desk and they said they didn't want to carry too many in stock???????

It's kind of normal for such shops not to have what you want. There always seems to be some kind of excuse why they don't carry enough of or any of what you need, and it seems to be very nearly every time I try to buy soemthing that there's some problem like this.

Which customers is it that they are actually managing to please, do you think?

The ordinary ones!

I bought shelves from focus, and had the same problem as behemoth. I wouldn't buy timer from them again - I'd just pop up to the woodyard, and get unfinished stuff, its loads cheaper, and I like the look of it. And its a local small company.

Mate is fitting a new B&Q Kitchen this week:

Incorrectly supplied plumbing for sink waste.

Designer forgot to take width of radiator into account, so unit has to be replaced and it's not in stock.

Generally not enough fixings supplied.

Don't think the finish is that brilliant either.

Not sure if he's on four or five revists to the local store now.

I think I'll pay a little bit more and get my kitchen from a local company.

Is it just me or does anybody else get filled with doom and despair just on entering one of these diy warehouses?

No, its not just you, I feel exactly the same way.

To fit shelves in a shed I would use the cheapest angled metal brackets on the uprights(good for the screws to bite into) or if they are too far apart for the weight then put two batons horizontally across, one the height of the shelf and the other the height of the bottom of the bracket and fix the brackets to them.(Not best explained, but i hope you know what i mean)
