Do we have any downsizers in...

Australia - preferably Sydney, or
South Africa - around Midrand/Johannesberg?

We are considering moves to both countries right now and would love any insights people may have.

Hi Random

I generally dislike expat sites but this one has useful information and articles about relocating to lots of different places and there is a forum and discussion boards.

As a couple of expat Brits we have a fairly good life here in Sweden, though I admit my lack of Swedish does cause us a few problems. As the OH has job options in both Sydney and Johannesburg i'm particularly interested in the quality of life/community information for downsizers etc.

I'd stay in Sweden. I think you'd lose more than you'd gain.

I think Mhito lived in South Africa - might be wrong.

I'm from SA, been here 10 years though.
Life is good, socialising is good, but crime and corruption high.
I believe infrastructure is going to pot.

Many Brits live there very happily and would never leave even if you paid them.

Personally, I'd head for Aus, but then I am living here and not in Johannesburg any longer.

Midrand area is great for big properties, downsizery type life a real possibility, security might be an issue.

I am sending mixed signal, I'm sorry.

My wifes sister lives very close to the Midrand area, if you have any specific questions I will gladly pass them on and report back to you.

Centurion is great, as is Midrand.
Depends what you're looking for - you will still be very close to large cities and jobs, but miles form anywhere really rural and village ike.
Enjoy the weather - today would be a typical winter's day - cold morning, hot sunshine and then cool evenings.
Highveld winters are heaven

SallyAB, yes, you have a good memory! I lived in SA from 1998 to 2002. Time runs fast, ne?

I rented a wonderful little garden flat outside Pretoria. I certainly enjoyed my time there but the crime got to me in the end. I have a few choice words to say about racism as well.

Here are two links who give wonderful info as well as no end of pleasure.

South Africa certainly does have its moments!

Edited to say that I'll be glad if my experience can be of any use. I can definitely agree on the weather bit: never knew the outdoors could be so pleasant. Centurion is quite high up as well and for people used to Scandinavia it is sheer heaven.

Hi random. I live in New England NSW Australia. If I can be of any assistance let me know. I was born in West Sussex England, but moved here by myself over 40 years ago. Best move I ever made! Great here where we live, not too hot and not too cold although we do get snow which I love.
Great lifestyle over here, big country, not so many people. You can go on holiday here and experience a wide variety of climates, from the Top End tropics in the north, to the Snowy Mountains and the Alps in the south. We are about half way between.
Regards.
