I have decided to try (again) to grow some button mushrooms I have space in one of my barns to try and was wondering if anyone had any tips. I am building a box lined with black plastic with a good lid and am filling it with suitable growing medium (surjestions welcome to alternatives) Have failed previously.

No idea personally. Welcome aboard though. What scale are you planning on growing them on?

We have just had our first "flush" of oyster mushrooms from a box kit. Was very simple to do. Not sure if the value of the mushrooms will cover the cost of the kit yet.

I've not had any success growing buttom mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus) from grain spawn. I have had some success with those polystyrene kits.

I would guess a decent online specialist would be able to provide more viable spawn. I have contemplated building a large bed with freshly rotted manure and then dumping in all the material from one of those kits to get a good start but not tried it yet.

I've also done those kits in the past but as we've just bought a small croft and I now have the space I want to try thinking bigger I have the packet spores and was looking to see if anyone had been sucsesfull with them.

I tried a box kit last year which promised 3 successive crops. The illustration sold it to me I harvested about half a dozen mushrooms in total. The kits were in Aldi again yesterday - I bought a pack of mushrooms instead!

Good luck, it sounds like you're on track for some shrooms. What company provided the spawn?

Suttons I'm overjoyed as I opened the pack last year i was prepared to accept needing a new pack but lets not count chickens before they hatch.

Once the mycelia is developed, some fungi need a cold spell to get them fruiting. Not sure if this applies to regular mushrooms though, it's just something interesting I picked up somewhere.

eta I think it was on telly, a smallish scale mushroom farm iirc
